Bieberbau

The guest room of the Bieberbau bears the signature of the sculptor / master plasterer Richard Bieber. He set himself a monument with it in 1894. Driven out of his old workshops in Leipziger Strasse by the new Tietz department store, he built a new studio building in Durlacher Strasse. Expressionist painters like Pechstein and Kirchner lived and worked here. The Bieberbau served as a restaurant for painters, neighbors and guests, and at the same time as a showcase for the plastering trade: an army of masters and apprentices created sculptures that Bieber's customers were supposed to serve as patterns and suggestions and at the same time to edify the restaurant guests. The house burned down during the war and lost its once magnificent exterior. As if by a miracle, however, Bieber's guest room was completely spared.
